Lantern Painting

George Washington, New Jersey & the Revolutionary War

Decorate your very own lantern!

Join us at the Bethel to decorate your own paper lantern just in time for Children's Day.

The tradition of decorating Mount Tabor cottages with paper lanterns dates back to the community's 19th-century camp meeting roots, when cottagers would illuminate their homes for Children's Day festivities each summer. You can learn more about the history of this tradition here.

For a closer look at the restoration of original Mount Tabor lanterns that were found in storage, you can read this article from the Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts.

Programs like this are made possible through the support of the Mount Tabor Historical Society and our community partners.
The Mount Tabor Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preserving, educating, and celebrating the history of our remarkable corner of New Jersey.
